[Rhodes-History] Daniel's wife
Sue, I have to prove to JoAnn that I can stir up a little trouble,
too. :)
In the Christopher database, you have Daniel Doctor Rhodes, (1-06-05)
married twice. The 2nd wife was Elizabeth White and the marriage was
in 1877. I think Prudence might have been a little upset with ol' Dan
bringing in a new wife. As you can see, he was still living with her
in 1880 and 1900.

[Rhodes-History] Re: Joseph Rhodes
Hi Ellen, I'm glad you came!
JoAnn, you're probably right, as usual. [Except about the horse
thieves, maybe]. But you left out one line of House's notes:
D.D. Rhodes, married Prudence V. Casto, daughter of John R. Casto. She
was born in 1836, and died in 1907. They had eight children.
Most of John House's notes are accurate, although I've found a couple
of big booboos in my own family. A big problem is that they were
transcribed - twice. You are bound to have some mistakes when that
happens. And you have to remember that what he wrote down is only what
someone told him or what he found in the same records that we can use
today. Except the death records hadn't been destroyed then, and the
cemeteries he visited were in a lot better shape. But in glancing over
what he wrote about the Rhodes family, I don't think I see any glaring
errors in what we can prove, which leads me to hope that whoever gave
him the info knew what they were talking about.
If William has a deed that shows that Joseph, Peter and Mathias were
brothers, then I'm inclined to believe that the others that House
lists as siblings is an accurate, though incomplete, list.
You'll notice that Ben's will does not mention Samuel, and he was the
youngest son. It was very common for wills to list only the younger
children, unmarried ones or the children of the 'new' wife. I think a
lot of the time, the older ones got their share when they married -
Dad chopped of some acreage for them or whatever. I have one will that
states that one son is to have "the white horse which he has already
sold" and to another "the 26 acres for which he already has a deed".

[Rhodes-History] Re: Joseph Rhodes
Welcome Ellen to this crazy search for our Rhodes Family. My line
is not through Benjamin but I have two aunts that married into this
line. My first source for Benjamin's family came from John House,
he made a lot of mistakes but somethings are correct. This is what
he said about Benjamin Rhodes:
Ben Rhodes was twice married, but I did not learn the names of these
wives. His Children were:
Peter Rhodes, went to California
Mathias Rhodes married a Parsons
Joe Rhodes lived on the old farm
Ben Rhodes married first Patty Parsons who died, and he later
married Hannah daughter of John P. Parsons.
John Rhodes married a Hamilton. He died on Elk Fork in 1910 or
1911, age 84 years.
Christopher Rhodes married first Sarah Bowles and later Mary
Rollins, widow of John Rollins, who's maiden name was Straley.
Mary Ann Rhodes married a Hammond and went west.
Jane Rhodes married a Smith and lived on Kentuck
Sam Rhodes married a Hammond and lived on the Flesher farm at Ripley.
Peter, Mathias and Joe were by his first wife(we thought) and were
born in VA. Benjamin went to Kentucky, married Nancy Golden 12-21-
1820. All of his children with Nancy were born in KY except Letitia
Jane born in Jackson Co. after Benjamin decided to move to Jackson
Co (W)VA. There's no mention of Doctor Daniel and William Rhodes in
the story by John House. If Joe lived on the old farm that may have
been all he received and was not mention in the will.
Would you be able to scan a copy of the will onto this site?
Again welcome and don't listen to William about our family being
thieves!!! JoAnn

[Rhodes-History] Joseph Rhodes
Hi,
I'm new to this list and have been "lurking", thought it was time to get
my feet wet. My husband is descended from Daniel F. McNear (McNeer) and
Charity Rhodes daughter of Joseph Rhodes and Sara Starcher. I have been
able to prove all this through census records, now to my question. Who
are Joseph's parents? I was told by someone that Benjamin Rhodes bn.
1783 Rockbridge VA, died Nov.12,1851 in Jackson Co.; married Nancy
Golden bn, 1797, died Sept 20, 1849 Jackson Co., however while in Salt
Lake City at the FHL I obtained a copy of a Benjamin Rhodes' Will. In it
he names his three son's; John Christopher, Dortor, and Daniel. He also
names daughters Mary Ann, Lelitia Jane. There appears to be no other
Benjamin Rhodes in VA
There is no mention of a Joseph. So who are Josephes parents?

Re: [Rhodes-History] Re: Joesph Rhodes
My cousin looked this up at one time.
Pvt Joseph Rhodes
Co. K, Reg 13 W. Va Infantry Union enlistee (3 yrs) at age 45
Musted in Barboursville, Wv 11-26-63
Mustered out: 6-22-1864
Surgeons's certificate of disability 11-29-64
In hospital at Gallipolis, OH from 4-23-1864 to 12/64
The 3 yrs. doesn't go with the dates. Sounds like he was hurt pretty bad but was
lucky since so many died. Military marker is at the Rhodes Cemetery behind
Harper Church near pond.
