!Col. Lively was prominent in public affairs; served as Sh e riff of Monroe County and in the Legislature of VA 1861-1 864. He was a me mber of the Virginia State Senate when Ri chmond fell and Lee surrendered. He wa s at Farmville, o n his way back to Richmond, when the news reached him of t h e evacuation of Richmond and the surrender at Appomattox , and the shock wa s so great he died within two hours.
