with Odo II, Count of Blois, who was trying to make good his own claim to
the Kingdom of Burgundy, and the nobles of the Ile-de-France. In disputes
with his younger brother Robert goaded by the malicious hatred of his mother
Constance for Henri, Henri managed to keep his crown thanks to the help of
Robert Le Diable, Duke of Normandy. Henry pardoned his brother, and gave him
the Duchy of Bourgogne, thus forming the first Capetian House of Bourgogne.
In 1033, Henry concluded an alliance with the Emperor Conrad II, but the
Count of Blois took the side of Odo, the King's youngest brother who had
been left landless. They, in turn, rallied a coalitions of nobles in
opposition to Henry. In 1034, after savage fighting, Odo of Blois submitted
thanks to the vigorous actions of Robert "Le Magnifique", but the war broke
out soon afterwards. In July, 1034, Constance died.
In 1037 Odo of Blois died while fighting in
Lorraine, and his lands were divided between his two sons, Theobald I who
took Blois and Stephen who was given Troyes and Meaux. The King was
victorious against them, and Eudes (Henri's brother) was captured and
incarcerated in Orl‚ans in 1039; Stephen defeated and his ally, the Count of
Vermandois was imprisoned. The Comte de Blois would lose Touraine to the
Comte d'Anjou, Henri's ally. The King took control of Sens together with the
abbeys of Saint-Père at Chƒlons, and Saint-M‚dard at Soissons. In 1043,
Emperor Henri III of Germany and King Henri I of France meet in Ivois to
arrange a lasting peace (shortly after Henry III married Agnès de
Bourgogne). By 1046, while relations between the Emperor and the King of
France soured -- the Emperor apparently still miffed at Henri I's having
fomented a revolt against the imperial crown in 1044 by the lords of
Franche-Comt‚ and of Bourgogne, Guillaume, the young Duke de Normandie,
requests the royal assistance of the King to quell a rebellion by the lords
of lower Bourgogne led by Renouf, Vicomte de Bessin and Gui, son of the
Comte de Bourgogne, titular fief of Brionne. In 1047 at Val-ès-Dunes, just
South of Caen, William fighting at the King's side is victorious and erects
the Chapel de Sainte-Paix near Caen to commemorate the occasion. Gui de
Brionne would require 3 more years of fighting to tame. In 1050, Henry I
fought against Geoffrey Martel of Anjou with the help of William, Duke de
Normandie. In Northern France, he was therefore able to contain the threats
from Blois-Champagne and to profit from the involvement of Normandy and
Anjou against one another. He consolidated his power within the royal
principality, but his broader schemes, particularly for regaining Lorraine

acquisition of the province by France in the Seventeenth Century.
The province had been established since the Stone
Age. From the Fourth Century BC, the inhabitants were the S‚quanes, a Celtic
tribe. At odds with most of their neighbors, they imprudently sought the aid
of the Barbarian Chief Arioviste who threatened to become master of Gaul.
Saved by Julius Caesar in 58 BC, the soon became impatient of Roman
discipline and rallied to Vercing‚torix. Following the defeat at Al‚sia in
52 BC, the Romans retook control. The region became part of the Roman
province of S‚quanaise.
Having survived the invasions of the Second and
Third centuries, the province was occupied in 457 by the Burgunds who
established a kingdom. In 534, after their final defeat by the Franks, this
kingdom disappeared. Troubled under the Merovingians, the province found
peace under Charlemagne and was administered by counts, the Archbishop and
missi dominici. The Monastery of Saint-Clause became an important force.
Part of the province was given to western Gaul by the Treaty of Meersen in
870, but became again imperial in the following decade. The control of Boson
de Provence was only temporary but in 888 Rodolphe Welf was elected King of
Burgundy, a kingdom which comprised not only the province but also other
regions such as western Switzerland. The province was ravaged by Hungarians
who in 937 put Besan‡on, Luxeuil and Mandeure to the torch. The weakness of
the kings of Burgundy facilitated the acquisition of power by the local
seigneurs. The province comprised several pays, Varais, Amous, cuens [later
Montagne], Portois, a part of Ajoie, the deaneries of Sexte and Atuyer and
the city of Besan‡on. From 914, Hughes "Le Noir", brother of Raoul, Duke of
Burgundy and King of France, held the Varais and was able to dominate a
large part of the province which was, on Raoul's death, annexed to the duchy
of Burgundy. Following Hughes' death, Burgundy passed to his son-in-law
Gilbert, whilst the lands to the East of the Sa“ne went to Aubri de Narbonne,
Comte de Mƒcon, whose son Lieutaud was perhaps also a son-in-law of Hughes.
From Lieutaud, these lands passed to Othe Guillaume,
son of his daughter, as did also Mƒcon, the latter indirectly. It was either
Othe Guillaume or his son, Raynaud, who was the first to style himself Comte

scholarly documents dmonstrate that Guillaume III was the son of a more
recent Raymond, who in turn was the son of Raymond III and Garsinde. The
earliest filliation of this relationship is the "Codex de Roda" dated
992(Keats-Rohan, Family Trees and Roots, Settipani, Christain: Chapter 11: "
Les comtes d'Anjou et leurs alliances aux Xe et XIe siècles", Page 247).
